My Skin Turned Sensitive After Vacation. What Actually Helps?

Sun, salt water and long flights leave skin dry, red and reactive for far longer than most people expect. At our Myeongdong clinic this is one of the most common reasons patients come in at the end of summer.

Hello, I’m Dr. Youjoo Hwang, Chief Director of LIJIN Clinic in Myeongdong, Seoul.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday. 🙂

After a long vacation or trip, many people return home feeling refreshed—but their skin may tell a slightly different story.

During consultations, I often hear comments such as:

“My skin feels much drier than before.”

“My face suddenly feels sensitive and irritated.”

“The redness hasn’t gone away since my vacation.”

Some patients also notice that skincare products they normally use without any problems suddenly sting, or that their skin feels rough and makeup no longer applies as smoothly.

This can be especially noticeable after a summer vacation.

During your trip, your skin may have been exposed to strong UV rays, high temperatures, humidity, and sweat for extended periods.

Swimming can add further exposure to seawater or chlorinated pool water, while frequently reapplying and removing sunscreen may mean cleansing your face more often than usual.

When several of these factors occur together, your skin may feel noticeably different once you return home.

It isn’t always just about newly visible pigmentation.

You may also experience dryness, rough texture, warmth, redness, or an overall feeling that your skin is simply not in its usual condition.

Today, I’d like to explain why LDM treatment, commonly known in Korea as “Water Drop Lifting,” may be considered as part of post-vacation skincare.

Why Does Skin Become More Sensitive After Vacation?

After returning from vacation, pigmentation is often the first thing patients notice.

They may look in the mirror, see darker spots, and immediately think:

“Should I get a pigmentation laser?”

UV exposure can certainly make pigmentation more noticeable.

However, when I evaluate skin after a vacation, I don’t look at pigmentation alone.

I also check whether:

  • Redness is still present
  • The skin feels unusually dry or rough
  • There is lingering warmth or sensitivity
  • Products that were previously comfortable now cause irritation
  • The skin is reacting more easily than usual

This matters because summer skin can be affected by more than UV exposure.

Heat, humidity, sweat, repeated cleansing, swimming, and changes in your usual skincare routine can all contribute to temporary changes in skin condition.

So if your skin feels particularly sensitive immediately after a vacation, it may not always be the right time to rush into an aggressive treatment.

Sometimes, the first question should be:

“What can my skin comfortably tolerate right now?”

💡 LIJIN TIP

After a summer vacation, don’t focus only on the pigmentation you can see.

Redness, dryness, sensitivity, and overall skin condition are also important when deciding which treatment should come first.

Why Consider LDM After a Summer Vacation?

One treatment we may consider depending on the patient’s skin condition is LDM, an ultrasound-based treatment commonly referred to as Water Drop Lifting in Korea.

LDM approaches the skin differently from a laser.

While laser treatments use specific wavelengths of light, LDM uses ultrasound energy and is characterized by rapidly alternating frequencies during treatment.

Its purpose is therefore different from treatments designed to directly target pigmentation or resurface the skin.

This makes LDM an option we may consider when the skin feels more sensitive than usual or when jumping immediately into a more intensive laser treatment may not be appropriate.

When explaining LDM to patients after vacation, however, I don’t simply describe it as a “soothing treatment.”

I prefer to think of it as:

A step toward creating a better foundation for the skin to return to a healthier condition.

In other words, rather than immediately trying to correct every visible concern after vacation, the initial goal may be to first improve the overall condition of the skin.

💡 LIJIN TIP

Post-vacation skincare doesn’t always need to begin with the strongest treatment.

If your skin feels unusually dry, red, or sensitive, assessing and managing its current condition first may be a more appropriate starting point.

Is LDM Only for Soothing Sensitive Skin?

When searching for LDM treatment, you’ll often see it described in relation to skin soothing.

And it is true that many patients become interested in LDM when their skin feels particularly sensitive.

However, it doesn’t need to be viewed only as a treatment for calming visible redness.

Depending on the patient’s skin condition and treatment goals, LDM can be used as a supportive ultrasound treatment for areas such as:

  • Overall skin condition
  • Skin texture
  • Sensitive-feeling skin
  • Pre- and post-procedure skincare
  • General skin maintenance

One thing I often emphasize during consultations is that stronger treatment does not automatically mean better treatment.

There are times when the skin is in good condition and more active treatment may be appropriate.

But after prolonged exposure to UV rays, heat, sweat, and other environmental stressors, there may also be times when improving the overall skin condition should come first.

For this reason, I often explain post-vacation LDM as a step for getting the skin back into better condition before deciding what should come next.

Once the skin feels more settled, we can then reassess concerns such as pigmentation, uneven texture, pores, or other issues and determine whether additional treatment is appropriate.

💡 LIJIN TIP

Think of post-vacation LDM less as a treatment designed to create a dramatic overnight change and more as a skin-conditioning step before planning your next treatment.

The appropriate sequence depends on what your skin needs at that particular time.

Who May Consider LDM After Vacation?

Not everyone needs LDM simply because they have returned from a vacation.

However, if you notice that your skin feels noticeably different afterward, it may be worth having your skin condition assessed before deciding on your next treatment.

LDM may be considered if:

  • Your face looks redder than usual or feels warm
  • Your skin feels dry or dehydrated
  • Your skin texture feels rough and makeup does not apply smoothly
  • Skincare products you normally tolerate suddenly feel irritating
  • You would prefer to begin with a relatively gentle skin-conditioning treatment rather than an intensive procedure

Some patients describe their skin by saying:

“Nothing is seriously wrong, but my skin just doesn’t feel like it normally does.”

In situations like this, adding multiple treatments immediately may not always be necessary.

The more important question is what your skin actually needs at that moment.

💡 LIJIN TIP

If your skin feels different after vacation, avoid choosing treatments based only on what you see in the mirror.

Dryness, redness, sensitivity, and recent UV or heat exposure can all be important when deciding what your skin is ready for.

Can LDM Remove Dark Spots After Vacation?

This is an important distinction to understand.

LDM is not a pigmentation laser designed to directly remove dark spots or melasma.

So if pigmentation has become more noticeable after your vacation, I would not suggest that LDM alone can address every pigmentation concern.

However, treatment timing matters.

If your skin has recently experienced significant UV and heat exposure and you are also noticing dryness, redness, or sensitivity, it may be helpful to assess the overall condition of your skin before deciding on more targeted treatment.

Once the skin condition has improved, any remaining pigmentation can then be evaluated according to its type and severity.

If rough texture or dehydration is the primary concern instead, a different treatment may be more appropriate.

In other words, rather than following a fixed sequence such as:

LDM → pigmentation laser

I prefer to think about treatment planning in this order:

Current skin condition → Main concern → What the skin can comfortably tolerate → Additional treatment if needed

💡 LIJIN TIP

LDM and pigmentation lasers serve different purposes.

If dark spots are your main concern, the first step is determining what type of pigmentation you have and whether your skin is currently in an appropriate condition for targeted treatment.

What Should Come First in Post-Vacation Skincare?

It is understandable to feel impatient when you look in the mirror after vacation.

Your skin may appear more tanned, dark spots may look more noticeable, and the texture may seem rougher than before.

That can make it tempting to address everything at once.

But when planning dermatologic treatments, I believe the important question is not how many treatments we can perform, but which concern should be addressed first.

If your skin is unusually dry, red, or sensitive after vacation, beginning with a skin-conditioning approach such as LDM may be one option.

Once the skin feels more comfortable, concerns that remain—such as pigmentation, texture, or enlarged pores—can be reassessed individually.

This allows the treatment plan to follow the condition of your skin rather than a predetermined package or sequence.

Post-Vacation Skin May Simply Need Time to Recover

Your vacation may be over, but your skin may need a little more time to return to its usual condition.

Rather than rushing to erase every visible sign of your trip, it can be helpful to first consider whether your skin needs time and supportive care to recover from prolonged exposure to sun, heat, sweat, swimming, and repeated cleansing.

For some patients, LDM Seoul may be considered as a relatively gentle way to manage overall skin condition before moving on to more targeted treatments.

For others, a different skincare treatment or medical procedure may be more appropriate.

The important point is to assess the skin first and choose the next step accordingly.

If pigmentation, rough texture, pores, or other concerns remain after your skin has settled, those concerns can then be addressed with treatments selected for the individual problem.

💡 LIJIN TIP

You don’t necessarily need to treat every post-vacation skin concern at once.

Sometimes the better starting point is simply to help your skin return to a more comfortable and stable condition—and then decide what it needs next.

At LIJIN Clinic in Myeongdong, we assess each patient’s current skin condition before recommending LDM or other treatments.

If your skin feels unusually dry, red, rough, or sensitive after traveling, a personalized assessment can help determine which approach is appropriate for you.
